28 July 1931 - 15 April 2013
It is with a profound sense of gratitude and respect that we remember Ian, who served as Chairperson and later as Honorary President of COCHASA, as well as on many other professional and sporting bodies up to the time of his passing. A true gentleman, his wisdom and integrity will be greatly missed.
Ian’s first career was as chairman and managing director of an oil company subsidiary. He worked in business for many years, during which he gained a degree in economics and an MBA at the University of Cape Town. After retiring, his interest in intra-psychic and relationship dynamics led him back to University to obtain BSoc Sci(Hons) and Master’s degree in psychology, also at UCT, where he has guest lectured in health psychology. In 1994 Ian started his second career as a Clinical Psychologist, working right up to his sudden death on Monday 15th April 2013.
Amongst his accomplishments, he played in the first Springbok Croquet team in a two-day test against Scotland in 1976 and later led a Springbok team to play against the U.S. in 1982. He involved himself in the Heart Transplant Unit as well as the Geriatric Unit at Groote Schuur Hospital, HIV/AIDS counselling and counsellor supervision at ATICC. As former national Chair of the Division of Health Psychology and Sports Psychology, he served on the Council of the Psychological Society of South Africa.
RIP Ian, you set an example of living life to its fullest, and we thank you for your selfless contribution.
